Obituary for Arvid Merle Johnson

Arvid M. Johnson was born on January 22, 1932, to Albert and Esther Johnson in Lancaster, MN. His life ended in his home on November 3, 2018, in Bakersfield, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Edward and wife Evelyn, sister Margaret Olsen and husband Rudolph, sister Doris Petersen and husband Delbert, and brother-in-law Richard Ehrenstrom. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Sonja; sister Edith Ehrenstrom; niece Lorraine Miller (Dick); niece Debbie Mettler (Tom) and family; niece Marla (Rick) Failing and family; nephew Jerroll (Diane) Petersen and family; daughter Cheryl Lorson and sons Joshua and Justin; son Steven Johnson and daughter Sierra; step-son Mid (Michelle) Wolf and children Daniel (Kristen), Justin (Sarah), Kyle (Desiree), Steve (Ally), Mike (Jamie), and Amy (Jerry); step-son Corey (Pam) Wolf and daughters Melissa and Katie; and stepdaughter Katie Banducci (Mark) and daughter Kelbi; along with sixteen great-grandchildren. He was also blessed with the best of caregivers, Linda Gutierrez, Maria Chanona, and Rosa Roman.
Arvid grew up and attended schools in Lancaster, MN, graduating in 1950. He enlisted in the Navy and served his country proudly for four years during the Korean War, stationed on mine sweepers. After the war, he attended the University of North Dakota for four years, majoring in Industrial Arts and Math. His first teaching assignment was in Lancaster, CA. After one year, he and his wife Mary Ellen (Forsyth) and daughter returned to North Dakota at which time he attended UND to earn a Master’s Degree. He decided to return to California and at this time a son, Steven, was born. He taught Drafting and Architectural Drawing at Wasco High School in Wasco, CA, an assignment he enjoyed until he retired in 1992.
He married Sonja Wolf Shell in 1987. They bought their second home, a cabin in Alta Sierra (on a snow plowed road!) and have the best of neighbors. Summer was cutting trees and splitting wood for the winter; Arvid loved every bit of it. They enjoyed some traveling to Alaska, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, but Arvid was happiest at the cabin – his paradise on the mountain.
Donations can be made in Arvid’s name to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 4500 Buena Vista Rd., Bakersfield, CA 93311. Share stories of Arvid on the Facebook page of Mid Wolf.
