Obituary for Raymond Gonzales

Move over “Terminator,” and make room for “The Educator.” Raymond Gonzales has been accepted to “University of the Heavens,” and can’t wait to start work on another degree.
Dr. Raymond Gonzales, “The Educator,” enrolled in “University of the Heavens,” September 5th, from his home in Oceanside, California. Ray spent the last month of his life feeding his soul with cherished stories, hilarious confessions, his favorite foods, and great music. His daughter Emily sang one of her original songs that was Ray’s favorite. All this, with family and friends by his side, Ray inhaled enough unconditional love to get him through his journey to his new school.
Ray was born July 16th, 1938, and was a fourth generation Kern County native. Ray attended Fairfax, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Garces High School. Ray continued his education at Holy Ghost Seminary in Michigan, studying abroad for a year in Spain, attending Bakersfield College, University of San Francisco, University of the Americas in Mexico City, and University of Southern California. He was also a proud Marine.
Ray’s heart and soul were driven by the fundamental truths that he stood by entire life: Equality and Education. He believed that all men and women were created equal, education was the road to the future, and that our country was the greatest country on the planet. Ray’s family will all cherish what they learned from him, which was to achieve their highest potential. It is with Ray’s support and belief in his family friends, that encouraged so many of them to become educators themselves. In doing so, they are all continuing Ray’s work every day in the classroom, educating young minds to go out and change the world. Ray was an inspiration to all who knew him. Anyone who ever engaged in a conversation with him will tell you this. True, he had a long time love affair with handkerchiefs, jazz, and guayaberas, but his heartfelt passion was to defeat the injustice and intolerance that is so prevalent in our world today.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso and Trini Gonzales, brother “Big Al,” and sister Mary Ellen. Pop’s/Papa/Pop-Pop is survived by son Paul Gonzales, daughter Emily Gonzales Escalante (John), Judy Stone, Mother of his children, grandchildren Austin, Alex, Gabriella, and Dylan, sisters Patsy Romero (Henry), Irene Gonzales, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunt, uncle, and treasured friends who will miss him dearly. Ray’s work is done here, and he has left instructions for his family to celebrate his mission and continue his legacy.
Services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on Friday, October 5th. Reflection will take place at 8:45 am, followed by Mass at 9am. A reception will be held at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, 1718 17th St. in Bakersfield. In memory of Raymond and what he stood for, voter registration will be taking place at the reception. For further information, contact Jessie at Peters Funeral Home (661-746-6314). “We’re Born, We Blink, and it’s Over.” Ray’s Blink Changed the World.
