Obituary for Jean Paul

It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Paul announces her passing on March 1, 2018, at Hoffmann Hospice House in Bakersfield, California. Her children were at her side as the Lord brought her home at the age of 89.

She will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters: Cynthia (David) Torigiani, Kathleen (Steve) Hinckley, and Candice (Desmond) Wilson; her six grandchildren: Mary (Scott) Lehman, Jeff (Sydney) Joiner, Tara (Alex) Rojas, Brent (Ellen) Hinckley, Chase (Angelina) Hinckley, and Brittany (Leo) Sanchez; and her six great-grandchildren: Thomas Lehman, Noah Rojas, Lucas Rojas, Stella Rojas, Grayson Hinckley, and Justin Joiner.

A long-time resident of Shafter, she was a past president and member of Shafter Woman’s Club and Wasco Woman’s Club, an avid bridge player, former member of Assistance League, and organist and catechism teacher at St. Theresa’s Church in Shafter.

She was an active community volunteer for many years in the Richland School PTA, Buttonwillow Mayor’s Race and Fall Festival, Wasco Toys for Tigers, and AWANA at First Baptist Church in Wasco.

Jean loved all kinds of music, attending plays and operas with her friends. She loved to sew and knit, making clothes and blankets for her children and grandchildren and many, many costumes throughout the years. Jean and her husband, Russell H. Paul, Jr., loved to dance, taking dance lessons and being active members in their dance club. They were also active members of California Farm Bureau.

Jean was born May 30, 1928, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Clarence and Mary Steiger, the youngest of one son and three daughters. She spent her early years in Oklahoma City and later the family moved to Ventura, California. She was married to Russell Hugh Paul, Jr., on September 15, 1946, and they raised two daughters in Santa Maria, and added a third daughter after moving to Shafter in 1955. Russ preceded her in death March 25, 1987.

The family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the staff at Hoffmann Hospice House for their attentiveness and loving care. In lieu of flowers, those who desire may donate in Jeans’ memory to either Hoffmann Hospice, 8501 Brimhall Road Ste 100, Bakersfield, CA 93312, or Wasco Toys for Tigers, 1618 Sunset, Wasco, CA 93280.
